The cardiologist is a bit puzzled as to the cause of the dilated aorta. At our echo lab, we measure the size of the ascending aorta in every patient. We think you should do so, too. If you know where to measure, this task can be performed really easily and quickly. In this video, Thomas shows you how he does it. As with our previous videos, we try to keep it simple and snappy.
Aortic dissection is the main reason a repair is performed. In aortic aneurysms the wall of the aorta becomes thin and more prone to tearing. Aortic regurgitation implies that the aortic valve leaks during diastole, such that blood regurgitates back from the aorta into the left ventricle. This results in volume overload in the left ventricle during diastole. The hemodynamic consequences of aortic regurgitation depend on whether the condition develops acutely or gradually.
One of the major causes of mortality and clinical hallmark of Marfan syndrome is aortic root dilation and related complications such as dissection, rupture and/or aortic valvular regurgitation.
